South vs north, in short
The south (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas) is where most first-time visitors stay — it’s sunnier on average, has the bulk of the island’s resort hotels, and is a short hop from the main airport (TFS). The north (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava) sees more cloud and rain but has a completely different atmosphere: older architecture, black-sand beaches, and easier access to Teide National Park and the Anaga mountains.
