Car Hire in Tenerife: What to Know Before You Book

Renting a car is the easiest way to see Tenerife properly — the north and south coasts feel like different islands, and buses between them are slow. Most rental horror stories (surprise deposits, pressure to buy extra insurance at the counter) come from booking directly with a single local supplier instead of comparing several up front.

How to book without getting stung

• Compare brands before you land. Prices for the same car vary a lot between suppliers at Tenerife South (TFS) and Tenerife North (TFN) airports. A comparison site lets you see several quotes side by side instead of walking counter to counter.
• Check the deposit amount, not just the daily rate. Local/budget suppliers often hold a larger deposit on your card than the big international brands — factor this into which offer is actually cheapest for you.
• Read the fuel policy. “Full-to-full” is the fairest — you get it full, return it full. Avoid policies where you pre-pay for a full tank and return it empty; you almost always lose money on unused fuel.
• Photograph the car before you drive off. Existing scratches on Tenerife’s rental fleet are common; a timestamped photo set protects your deposit.

Both airports have on-site rental desks, but Tenerife South (TFS) has by far the larger selection since most tourist traffic lands there. If you’re staying in the south (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas), picking up at TFS is straightforward. If you’re heading straight to the north (Puerto de la Cruz), check whether your supplier has a TFN desk or charges a one-way drop fee.

Driving in Tenerife is on the right, roads are generally in good condition, and the TF-1 and TF-5 motorways connect most of the island quickly. The mountain roads up to Teide are narrow and winding — take them slowly, especially if you’re not used to switchbacks.
