Masca Valley: Guided Hike or Self-Drive + Jeep Safari?
Masca is a tiny village perched in a dramatic gorge in the Teno mountains, at the end of one of the most spectacular — and narrow — mountain roads in Tenerife. Most visitors either drive in to see the village and viewpoints, or do the full gorge hike down to the sea, which requires more planning.

Why book the hike as a guided tour
The Masca gorge hike ends at a small cove only reachable by sea — most guided tours include a boat back to a nearby harbour, which is far simpler than arranging your own return transport up the gorge. The park authority also caps daily hiker numbers, so a booked tour secures your access permit rather than leaving it to chance on the day.
Practical tips
- The access road is single-lane in places with sheer drops — if you’re not confident on mountain switchbacks, let someone else drive (guided tours handle this).
- Parking in Masca village is extremely limited. Arrive before mid-morning if you’re self-driving, or expect to park well outside the village.
- The hike is more strenuous than photos suggest — uneven volcanic terrain, some scrambling, and no shade for most of the route.
